The attack took place on a police truck as it was passing through the Sariab Mill area on the Quetta-Sibbi Road on Wednesday.

Abdur Razzaq Cheema, the police chief in Quetta, which is the provincial capital of Baluchistan Province, said 24 people had also been wounded in the incident, several critically.

He said the death toll could rise.

Sarfaraz Bugti, the home minister for Baluchistan, visited the explosion site. Later, he said such attacks would not break the morale of the security forces.

“We are at war and our security forces are being targeted as they are crushing the enemies,” Bugti said. “We will continue the war against these terrorists and we will defeat them.”

In a separate attack in Quetta, a police officer was gunned down by assailants riding on a motorcycle, authorities said.

In the drive-by shooting, the two assailants shot and killed police inspector Abdus Salam as he was on his way to work.

Cheema, the police chief, said the gunmen fired multiple shots at him before fleeing.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.
