Israel's Magen David Adom ambulances service said at least two people were in critical condition, seven wounded moderately and the rest were lightly hurt.

The incident took place on Hebron (al-Khalil) Road in southwest al-Quds on Monday.

Police said in a statement that a bomb went off on one bus and caused fire that spread to another bus and a car.

"A professional examination of police sappers has proven that a bomb exploded on the back part of the bus, resulting in the wounding of passengers and the burning of the bus," the statement said, adding, "In addition, another bus and car were damaged."

Al-Quds Mayor Nir Barkat told an Israeli television channel that the blast was caused by a small bomb on the back of the bus.

Most of the injuries were reportedly burn wounds and smoke inhalation.

Israel's Shin Bet internal security service confirmed the bus blast was a terror attack.

Israeli police initially said the incident was an “attack” without providing further details. A police spokesman, however, said later that they are investigating the cause of the incident, which he said was not immediately clear.

Many police and border police forces are deployed across the city to maintain security for its residents and ensure a quick response to any call.

Al-Quds police commander said in response to the explosion: "We are checking who placed the bomb and what was its source. We do not know of any specific warning about the bomb. All possibilities are being examined."
